Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan says he would “love” to see his former club sign Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster on loan in January
Reports earlier this week explained that Jurgen Klopp is happy to let 19-year-old Brewster leave on loan in January in order to get some more first-team experience and Leeds are one of the clubs who’ve been tipped to sign the teenager.
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said that he would be delighted if Leeds could complete such a deal, ahead of Crystal Palace who are also interested in the England youth international.
He said:
I’d love him at Leeds. He is young, hungry, exciting, well-spoken about by Jurgen Klopp. If we could pull that deal out of the bag in January, wow, perfect. It would be a great deal for us. He would offer something a bit different to what we’ve already got.. We need strength in depth upfront. Two senior strikers, Patrick Bamford and Eddie Nketiah, is not enough for a Championship campaign. If we can get someone like Rhian Brewster, that would give us three proper centre-forwards who can be rotated as and when needed. You need three strikers in case of injuries and suspensions if you’re going for promotion.
Read Liverpool Verdict
Brewster has only made two senior appearances this season, both in the League Cup and unless Liverpool suffer somewhat of an injury crisis over the next few weeks, it seems likely that his only other game will come against Aston Villa as the Reds intend to play a very young side in that game.
Therefore, the idea of loaning the 19-year-old out makes perfect sense, but they need to send him somewhere where he will play regularly and with Bamford and Nketiah already at Leeds, Brewster could struggle to get regular minutes at Elland Road.
However, Marcelo Bielsa is an excellent manager and if he’s willing to agree to give Brewster regular playing time, then a move to Leeds would be a good move for the striker.
