Four Findings: Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

Regaining rhythm proves most challenging for the Reds returning from an international break. Restarting their league campaign against Crystal Palace, Liverpool gained another victory, 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

As expected, the home side showed little ambition. While not at their best, the Reds remained patient through the first half. Liverpool dominated possession but lacked penetration, content to recycle the ball in Palace’s half.

Liverpool received a scare when Palace seemed to score on a corner kick, only to have the goal ruled out after a VAR review. Jordan Ayew pushed Dejan Lovren in the back just before the ball arrived, resulting in a foul that saved the Reds from falling behind. There will certainly be disagreement over the call, but a foul is a foul.

The second half saw Liverpool brighter and more intent on securing a result but continuing to toil. Sadio Mané score just after the break to take the lead. Yet, finding a second stalled, as the Reds struggled to create quality chances.

Eventually, the Eagles capped their strongest run of play when Wilfried Zaha equalized in the 82nd minute with Liverpool failing to put the match away.

However, Liverpool’s ability to respond proved the difference once again. Roberto Firmino’s finish three minutes later ensured the Reds retook the lead. Despite another scare flashed late after Zaha pulled himself clean, just wide of the far post, before blazing one into the stands. Still, Liverpool sustained the victory.

Here are four findings from the match.
