Another Merseyside derby and another victory. Liverpool knocked Everton out of the FA Cup with 1-0 victory at Anfield.
The blue side of Liverpool will struggle to sleep after a side filled with Reds’ reserves dominated and elevated past Everton. Bill Shankly’s famous quote, “This city has two great teams – Liverpool and Liverpool reserves” proved prophetic on a night that sees the Reds advance to the cup’s fourth round.
From the start, the home side looked far from overawed by the occasion. In fact, many of the youngest players were Liverpool’s brightest. With teenagers all over the pitch, the Reds showed just how deeply Jurgen Klopp has rekindled the winning culture of the Boot Room.
Liverpool dominated possession during the first half despite surrendering a handful of decent chances Everton failed to finish. Adrian displayed the kind of form that helped the Reds get off to their unbeaten league run.
The second half started much as the first, Liverpool exerting control, pressing when required, and possessing the ball much of the time. As the side grew into the game, it became clear only on side was likely to win.
Then in the 71st minute, Curtis Jones found space just outside the left corner of the area. Wrapping his right foot around the ball, he struck a sublime shot into the back of the net. Anfield erupted and Everton has not won at Anfield during a fair number of Liverpool’s starting players’ lifetimes
Here are four findings from the match.
