Boxing Day against the last place side should be cause for rejoicing but Liverpool managed to make things difficult for a stretch before summoning their free-flowing spirit for the festive fixture. After a quick score and a slow half, Liverpool swatted Swansea aside 5-0 at Anfield.
In a first half that saw Philipp Coutinho score a beautiful opener, the goal may have been scored too early. Despite the fantastic finish just after five minutes of play, Liverpool struggled to settle into any kind of decent rhythm, sloppy all over the pitch, and coasting when they should have killed the match off.
After the break the side looked considerably more resolute to finish the evening with a bit more festive cheer. Within minutes of restarting, Roberto Firmino made up for his poor miss before the break. Latching onto an exquisite free-kick cross to the back stick from compatriot Coutinho, Firmino one-timed it home.
Once Trent Alexander-Arnold notched his first league goal with a dash and smash unde the crossbar, Swansea was definitively snuffed. Firmino would find another, courtesy of Mo Salah’s selflessness and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would mint his own finish to finalize a battering that did not altogether look like it was coming at first.
Here are four findings from the match.
