Four Findings: Liverpool 5-5 Arsenal (5-4 on pens)

In a mad midweek fixture, Liverpool advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, drawing 5-5 with Arsenal at Anfield before winning 5-4 on penalties.

This game had almost everything, including equal parts awful and amazing, as two young sides went back and forth in a thriller.

Liverpool earned an early own goal when Alex Olade-Chamberlain sent a low cross into the danger area, leading to Shkodran Mustafi sending the ball into his own net.

After a half an hour Liverpool were down 3-1, however, following Lucas Torreira’s strike and a brace from Gabriel Martinelli.

Just before the break, Harvey Elliot won a penalty that James Milner slotted home to pull one back.

The second half saw a host of errors repeated.

Milner left Kelleher short on a backpass and the Reds went 4-2 down, but within 10 minutes, Liverpool stormed back.

Oxlade-Chamberlain struck an absolute beauty from outside the box, then Divock Origi spun brilliantly and blasted a shot into the Kop net to make it 4-4.

Despite Liverpool looking in control again, Arsenal’s Joe Willock unleashed a stunning 30-yard curler into the top left corner.

The Gunners thought they had the game won, but debutant Nico Williams floated a stoppage time cross that Origi steered home with an acrobatic volley to take the tie to penalties.

Curtis Jones fulfilled a childhood dream, sealing the win with the fifth and final spot-kick, after Caoimhin Kelleher had saved from Dani Ceballos.

Here are four findings from the match.
