Four Findings: Napoli 2-0 Liverpool

Liverpool’s  defence of the Champions League started with a 2-0 defeat at Napoli on Tuesday night.

Not unlike last year’s trip to Italy, Liverpool lost it late on, with the Serie A side receiving a dodgy penalty call, before Fernando Llorente added a second.

In a match that was open and entertaining, Liverpool showed industry and aggression for much of the game.

The first half was played at breakneck speed, with both sides attempting to strike first.

As Liverpool pushed, their passing was too often loose, and as the match progressed, they could not pinpoint the level of precision required to create their customary gilt-edged chances.

The half-time interval did little to slow things down, as the second half started at a similar pace from the first.

In the 82nd minute, Andy Robertson was the victim of a Jose Callejon con job that suckered German referee Felix Brych and VAR into awarding a penalty.

Dries Mertens converted from the spot, even though Adrian got a hand on it.

Then, in the dying minutes, Virgil van Dijk made an uncharacteristic passing error that allowed Llorente to pounce on the ball and slot home to secure the result.

Here are four findings from the match.
