Four of Liverpool’s worst signings

Liverpool is a club steeped in footballing history. The Reds hold a number of competitive titles and have won endless trophies in their rich history, much to the envy of other English clubs.

However, the one major title that has eluded them over the years is the Premier League. Bookmakers are offering an attractive price for Liverpool to finish in the top 4 next season, but ever since the league in its current state was formed back in 1992, the club has done everything it can to try and grab hold of that elusive title which has involved sinking money into players that have failed to cut the mustard at Anfield.

The summer transfer window has already started early, and the rumour mill is in full swing.

It’s fair to say Mr Rodgers hasn’t quite got it right in the transfer market yet (understatement), but fear not Brendan, you’re not the only Liverpool gaffa to fall foul of some awful signings.

Here’s four of the worst…

ANDY CARROLL (£35 million)

All Sports Here

There have been plenty of lacklustre and bizarre buys for Liverpool over the years but the biggest waste of money had to be Kenny Dalglish’s purchase of Andy Carroll from Newcastle United.

Carroll was a consistent performing striker up at St. James’ Park, and form-wise was ideal for Liverpool following the departure of star striker Fernando Torres.

However, his £35 million price tag was undeniably high, and, after only managing to put away 4 goals for the Reds in the 2011/2012 season, this signing can only be considered as a major flop.

EL HADJI DIOUF (£10 million)

Says.com

Diouf arrived at Anfield in 2002 following his eye-catching performance at that year’s World Cup finals.

The Senegalese player was picked up for £10 million but unfortunately his potential as a Premiership striker never materialised and he actually boasts the unhonourable acclaim of having one of the worst strike rates in the club’s history.

SEAN DUNDEE (£1.8 million)

Goal.com

The former Karlsruher player had been earning a serious name for himself in the German Bundesliga which drew the attention of joint managers Gérard Houllier and Roy Evans when they were looking for a little extra support up front whilst star strike Robbie Fowler was out injured.

Sadly, the South African only ended up making 5 appearances for the club without managing to score single goal amd that was the end of his Liverpool career.

ALBERTO AQUILANI (£17 million)

RTE

When Liverpool favourite Xabi Alonso moved to Real Madrid in 2009, the hunt was on to fill his boots and the large hole that had appeared in the Red’s midfield.

It was Italian player Alberto Aquilani who was selected to fill the gap but unfortunately he never got a real grasp on the English game and made only 18 appearances in all competitions for the club.

What made things even worse was that it took 2 years before Liverpool could even sell him on before he was finally shipped out to Italian side Fiorentina in 2012.
