Steven Gerrard isn’t likely to return to Liverpool on loan in January, says MLS Commissioner Don Garber, as quoted in the Telegraph.
A potential Anfield return had been described as ‘conceivable’ by Liverpool’s chief executive Ian Ayre, but Garber has now diminished any possibility of that happening.
When asked about a potential return to Liverpool for Gerrard, Garber said:
I don’t think so. And I had not heard that was something that was being contemplated.
Several high-profile players that have moved to MLS have returned to European football on temporary loan deals since the division’s rise in prominence, including Thierry Henry, David Beckham, Robbie Keane and Landon Donavan.

However, this type of transfer has become less frequent more recently, and Garber suggested it’s unlikely to pick up again in the future:
I don’t believe we are going to see many more off-season loans happening in our league, particularly at what I would call the high-level designated players.
David Beckham famously joined AC Milan on loan from LA Galaxy twice, in 2009 and 2010, in an attempt to aid his international career.
However, now that Gerrard has retired from England duty, it seems even more unlikely such a return to Liverpool might be allowed.
Garber said he had been “really upset” with Beckham’s moves to Milan, given the “massive commitment” that the MLS had made to him.
