Gomez relishing left-back opportunity

Liverpool new boy Joe Gomez has been thrown into the deep end since his arrival on Merseyside, but he is loving the challenge that Brendan Rodgers has put in front of him.

Despite being one of the youngest members of the squad at just 18, Gomez has been an ever-present thus far in the Premier League for the Reds, earning the praise of almost everyone that has watched him.

In an interview with Nicholas Veevers of TheFA.com, Gomez was keen to present his enthusiasm over his role with Liverpool and how it’s pushing him on as a player.

“I’m just trying to learn and constantly challenge myself,” said the teenager.

I prefer being somewhere when I’m a bit out of my depth and need to challenge myself.

Gomez was signed from Charlton Athletic this summer after he drew comparisons to a young Rio Ferdinand, despite predominantly playing at right-back.

On Thursday night, the youngster is in line to make his England Under-21 debut against the USA at Preston’s Deepdale – alongside fellow Red Jordon Ibe – after impressing on the left side for Liverpool.

“At Charlton, I was playing at right-back so I suppose it’s similar, but it is a bit different being on my weaker foot,” added Gomez.

But, it’s all helping me. I’d like to play centre-back eventually in the coming years, but it helps me positionally to play as a full-back.

“And I’m enjoying it, getting up and down the wing and it’s been good.”

After the international break, Gomez will likely get his first taste of derby action, as the Reds face Manchester United next weekend.
