New Liverpool full-back Joe Gomez is keeping his focus on the job in hand, rather than letting his brilliant start to life in the Premier League go to his head.
The 18-year-old played 26 times for Charlton Athletic last season and signed for Liverpool two months ago.
He was predominantly a right-back for the Addicks but has been playing on the opposite side of the defence for Brendan Rodgers – and impressively so.
Slotting in at left-back, Gomez has contributed to the Reds’ two Premier League clean sheets and victories in their opening two games but isn’t fazed by the attention he’s receiving. Speaking to the club’s official website, he said:
Of course, I appreciate all of the positivity and the messages, but I try not to pay too much attention to it all – I just keep focused on the next game and on keeping on playing. I know there’s a lot of work to be done.
At a time when money and fame can often prevent young players from staying well-grounded, the new number 12 at Anfield is admirably humble and is solely looking to improve as a player and help his team.
He continued: “I’m adjusting and that’s only helping me because I’m still learning. Even in training with the rest of the boys, they’re all top-quality players and it helps me to work alongside them.”
Gomez’s next game will likely come at the Emirates on Monday night as Rodgers’ men face Arsenal, which should prove to be their toughest test so far this season.
