Liverpool fans react to Messi winning FIFA award over Van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk has lost out on the Best FIFA Men’s Player award to Lionel Messi, with the Argentine legend prevailing at the ceremony in Milan on Monday.

Van Dijk was in luxurious company, considering he was also up against Cristiano Ronaldo for the prize.

The Dutchman is arguably the best defender in world football currently, whether it be his leadership, technical brilliance or athleticism. There is nobody like him.

The Dutchman has been the answer to Liverpool’s defensive woes, having arrived from Southampton for a hefty fee.

Here is what Reds fans think of Van Dijk losing out to Messi, with many left bemused.

The Dutch colossus is now one of the best players in the world.

Messi is possibly the greatest player to ever touch a football, however, so his triumph is understandable, albeit a shock.

After all, last season was extraordinary for him, as he scored 51 goals in 50 appearances. Ridiculous.

Van Dijk was hard done by, though, after winning the PFA Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Year,  UEFA Men’s Player of the Year and the Champions League.

There is still a good chance he will win the Ballon d’Or, however, which is the ultimate individual prize in football.
