Liverpool to fight Tottenham for English youngster

Liverpool and Tottenham are reportedly in a race to sign League Two youngster Ben Wilmot from Stevenage.

The young centre-back, who has recently turned 18, is wanted by a number of Premier League clubs, but it looks like either Merseyside or North London will be his preferred and most likely destination.

Wilmot has been on the bench for Stevenage in the last three games, none of which the Boro have been victorious, losing away to Mansfield by a solitary goal and drawing 1-1 at home to Notts County and Coventry.

The 18-year-old played 90 minutes in the Checkatrade Trophy against Brighton & Hove Albion U23’s, which Stevenage won 3-1, with a reported 30 scouts there to watch him.

His only other full appearance was another Checkatrade Trophy match away at MK Dons. However, his performances in these games have been enough to attract the top clubs.

He also came on as a late substitute in Stevenage’s 5-0 win in the FA Cup First Round against Nantwich Town, meaning they face Swindon Town at home in the Second Round.

Manager of Stevenage, Darren Sarll, has said about Wilmot and his performances (via Daily Mail):

He plays like a 30-year-old, he’s got a wonderful, mature outlook on the game.

Stevenage lie 13th in League Two, five points outside the Play-Offs for promotion. However, Wilmot could be promoted three divisions in January if he keeps up with these impressive performances.
