Liverpool in ‘advanced talks’ with Wijnaldum over new deal

Gini Wijnaldum is in ‘advanced talks’ with Liverpool over signing a new deal, according to journalist Nicolo Schira on Twitter.

The 29-year-old’s current contract at Anfield expires in the summer of 2021, at which point he could leave on a free transfer.

Schira’s positive update claims that Wijnaldum is now close to agreeing a deal that will keep him at the club until 2023, with an option for another year on top of that.

The Netherlands international has made 177 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 18 goals.

Wijnaldum, who Jurgen Klopp previously described as ‘perfect’, has become a huge player for Liverpool in the past four seasons, so this update is very encouraging.

While at 29, the Dutchman may not have too many years left at his peak, his fitness levels suggest he could keep playing for a long time still. He himself has even hinted at playing well into his 30s.

While he may not earn the same amount of praise as some of his teammates, his understated style of play in the middle of the park has played a major role in the Reds’ recent success.

His ability to keep possession is an obvious strength – he has a 90.9 per cent pass completion rate in the Premier League this season – but he is also physically very strong, positionally sound and possesses an ability to score big goals, most famously in the Champions League.
