Liverpool supporters have spent the past week learning the name Yan Diomande. Today we bring you this exclusive interview in partnership with Universo Sportivo. Where Yan Diomande business partner talks all about the man Liverpool fans are hoping to get to know alot better.
The 19-year-old is no longer viewed as simply another exciting young talent. After reports emerged that Liverpool had already seen an opening offer worth around €90m plus €10m in add-ons rejected, with RB Leipzig believed to value him closer to €130 million, Diomande has quickly become one of the most talked-about young footballers in Europe.
But away from the transfer headlines is a story very few Reds supporters know.
Before attracting Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Europe’s biggest clubs.
Diomande was simply “Dio” to those around DME Academy in Florida. Just one of the lads!
In an exclusive interview conducted by Marco Zapelli, Jared Antista owner of DME Academy Sarasota and business partner of DME Academy Daytona, where Diomande developed after arriving from Ivory Coast. Offered a rare insight into the footballer and person Liverpool may be preparing to invest over £100 million in.
“He was different from the first touch”
Antista remembers the exact moment he realised Diomande wasn’t an ordinary prospect.
Their academies met in an annual fixture between DME Daytona and DME Sarasota.
The game barely lasted a half before everyone understood they were watching someone special.
“He scored four goals in one half against us. The boys tried to foul him but couldn’t. He was so smooth on the ball and accelerated from zero to a hundred in a second.”
For Antista, there wasn’t any debate.
“I literally said to my head coach, this kid is the best player I’ve ever seen in person.”
That first impression has never changed.
He describes Diomande as combining explosive acceleration, physical power, fearless dribbling and supreme confidence — qualities Liverpool supporters have already started noticing through highlight clips circulating online.
Liverpool aren’t just buying talent
The biggest takeaway from Antista’s recollections isn’t actually about football.
Instead, it’s about personality.
Modern football is filled with gifted teenagers, but Liverpool have consistently prioritised mentality alongside ability when identifying elite young players.
According to Antista, Diomande ticks every box.
Rather than keeping to himself, the teenager regularly spent time helping younger academy players, chatting with children after matches and checking in with academy youngsters through social media after important games.
He even remained in contact with Antista’s own children after leaving the United States.
“He was incredibly friendly, courteous and kind to everyone around him.”
“He would put an arm around younger players, juggle with them at camp and always ask how everyone was doing.”
Those qualities perhaps explain why so many people around DME remain emotionally invested in his career.
“He didn’t want to leave”
Perhaps the most remarkable story concerns his move to Spain.
After attracting interest from MLS clubs, Leganés eventually secured his signature.
Most teenagers would have packed immediately.
Diomande apparently did the opposite.
According to Antista:
“Here’s a funny story. He didn’t want to leave DME. In fact, he hid around campus for hours on the day he was supposed to leave.”
That anecdote says plenty.
Rather than seeing DME simply as a stepping stone, he had built genuine relationships with coaches, staff and teammates.
Could Liverpool unlock his full potential?
Asked whether Diomande has already reached his ceiling, Antista barely hesitated.
“He’s young, he’s humble, he’s hungry. I think he can become one of the best players in the world.”
While admitting Luis Enrique’s coaching would also suit the winger, Antista believes Diomande possesses the mentality to succeed anywhere.
Liverpool’s recruitment department will undoubtedly have formed its own assessment.
However, hearing someone who watched his development every day describe him as both humble and relentlessly driven will only reinforce why Europe’s elite are prepared to spend extraordinary money.
“A young Thierry Henry”
Comparisons are always dangerous.
But Antista wasn’t afraid to make one.
Rather than likening Diomande to today’s generation of wingers, he instead pointed towards an Arsenal legend.
“Dio is unique. He attacks confidently with both feet… he is a young Thierry Henry.”
Whether he ultimately reaches those heights remains to be seen.
What is becoming increasingly clear, though, is that Liverpool aren’t chasing a player based purely on statistics.
They’re pursuing someone whose character appears to match his remarkable talent.
Why Liverpool supporters should be excited
Transfer fees create enormous expectations.
If Liverpool eventually meet Leipzig’s valuation, Diomande will arrive carrying one of the largest price tags in the club’s history.
But listening to someone who knew him long before the transfer speculation suggests Liverpool would be signing much more than raw ability.
They would be signing a teenager described as humble, respectful, obsessed with football and loved by everyone who helped shape his journey.
That combination may explain why Liverpool have already shown they’re willing to invest so heavily.
And if the Reds do eventually win the race, supporters will know they aren’t simply buying one of world football’s brightest prospects.
They may be signing one of its brightest personalities too.
