Liverpool Player Ratings: Arsenal (H)

Liverpool somehow reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after beating Arsenal 5-4 on penalties on Wednesday, following a rip-roaring 5-5 draw at Anfield.

After a game filled with excitement and mistakes, it came down to players holding their nerves in the shootout.

While Liverpool netted all of their spot-kicks, Dani Ceballos’ miss proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Liverpool led early through Shkodran Mustafi’s own goal, but Arsenal responded with two tap-ins from Lucas Torreira and Gabriel Martinelli.

It was 3-1 when the latter scored another, following a mistake from 16-year-old Harvey Elliot.

The youngster redeemed himself by winning a penalty on the stroke of half-time, however, which James Milner converted to make it 3-2.

The veteran sold his goalkeeper short with a weak backpass that allowed Ainsley Maitland-Niles to score the Gunners’ fourth goal, though.

Thereafter, two very good finishes from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi brought the game to 4-4 with 25 minutes left.

Joe Willock put the away side ahead with a thunderous striker 19 minutes from time, but Origi came up with a 95th-minute equaliser to save Liverpool’s impressive home record.

Once it went to penalties, one miss from Ceballos was enough to put the Reds through.

Here’s how we rated the Liverpool players on the night.
