Liverpool’s history against German clubs at Anfield

After Tuesday night’s 2-1 victory in Germany; the Reds now have Champions League qualification in their hands, as Hoffenheim travel to Liverpool for the second leg.

Liverpool have met a number of German teams in Europe, none of who have managed to beat the Reds at Anfield.

In the 17 times that German clubs have visited Anfield; Liverpool have come out the victors on 14 occasions, drawing the other three games.

The first battle at Anfield between Liverpool and a German club came in 1965 as Bill Shankly’s Reds were held to a goalless draw by FC Koln.

Only one other team has managed to leave Anfield without a defeat and that was Bayern Munich, who played out goalless draws in 1971 and 1981.

The other eight sides who have visited Anfield have all tasted defeat, most recently it was Borussia Dortmund on that magical evening in the Europa League quarter-final, as the Reds came out with a 4-3 win thanks to a Dejan Lovren header in added time.

In that same Europa League campaign, the Reds met Augsburg for the first time in a rather forgettable 1-0 win in the group stages, courtesy of a fifth minute James Milner penalty.

Liverpool have also met: Dynamo Dresden, 1860 Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen, none of which could topple the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp will be looking to maintain this incredible record when Hoffenheim visit on Wednesday night, with a place in the Champions League group stages up for grabs.
