Liverpool’s relentless pursuit of back-to-back Premier League titles has left a trail of casualties in its wake—and one Anfield star now looks increasingly likely to be the next name to fall.
Following a summer of unprecedented investment that saw FSG break from their traditional caution to hand Arne Slot a ‘war chest’ of world-class talent, the competition for places at its highest.
But while the new arrivals have fortified Liverpool’s quest to remain atop the English perch, the collateral damage is becoming clear.
For one first-team regular, the dream of a sustained Anfield career is drifting toward a difficult conclusion.
Despite his pedigree, minutes have become a rare currency under Slot’s high-stakes rotation, and as the club prepares for yet another aggressive window, the writing on the wall suggests a summer exit is now the most logical solution for all parties.
In total, a whopping £450m was reported to have been splashed on new signings, with Florian Wirtz justifying his steep £116m price-tag in spurts, having collected six goals and eight assists since joining.
Unfortunately for him, he now looks to have sustained a nasty injury, which will keep him out of action for the time being, leaving Arne Slot with even more selection headaches to address.
He won’t be chopping and changing the goalkeeper positions anytime soon, though, which will be unwelcome news for Giorgio Mamardashvili, who arrived during the same bumper window as Wirtz.
Giorgi Mamardashvili is a key part of Liverpool’s long-term future, the goalkeeper officially joined the club in July 2025 after a deal worth up to £29 million was agreed with Valencia in August 2024.
Liverpool’s impressive defensive performances
Indeed, while the likes of Alexander Isak and Wirtz have dominated conversations in recent times at Anfield, the steadiness of the defence at Liverpool has also been receiving its flowers.
Across Liverpool’s last three victories, first-team stalwart Alisson has kept three consecutive clean sheets, meaning the two-time Premier League title winner is sitting on a sturdy 12 clean sheets from 29 overall games for the campaign.
Slot will just be happy he doesn’t have any bugbears in goal he has to deal with, as Mamardashvili sinks further and further down the pecking order, just mere months into his Anfield stay.
Having cost around £29m to bring in, a lot more first-team minutes have been expected to be handed to the Georgian stopper, who looks to already be eyeing an exit route out of the Merseyside giants.
An update on Mamardashvili’s future
The former Valencia ‘keeper was given chances here and there to impress during the start of the season, when Alisson was out of action through injury.
The 35-time Georgia international has largely struggled, though, when thrown into the deep-end of being the Reds’ main stopper, with only one Premier League clean sheet next to his name from five outings in the difficult division.
Giorgi Mamardashvili: Liverpool Stats 2025/26:
| Competition | Appearances | Minutes | Clean sheets | Goals conceded |
| Premier League | 5 | 450 | 1 | 10 |
| Champions League | 4 | 304 | 2 | 5 |
| FA Cup | 1 | 90 | 0 | 1 |
| League Cup | 1 | 90 | 0 | 1 |
| Total | 11 | 934 | 3 | 17 |
It’s no great shock, therefore, that Alisson resumed his first-team duties when he was back from injury, with TeamTALK reporting that the 25-year-old – who is now sitting on the substitutes bench regularly – is ‘seriously considering’ his Reds future.
The report states that Mamardashvili is growing ‘increasingly frustrated’ by his understudy role to the Brazilian, with his anger no doubt increasing when he wasn’t selected recently in the FA Cup versus Brighton and Hove Albion.
Slot did comment on that decision, by stating: ““For me, it wasn’t a surprise.
Last season, we made a different choice in the FA Cup, that’s true.
Usually, for me, the league cup is for the ‘second choice’ goalkeeper, and in the FA Cup I just decide at the moment.
The first game he played because Ali came back from an injury and I think Giorgi needed the game, and maybe it was a bit too much for Ali at that moment of time to play another game.”
His pathway into the first team is noted as being blocked, meaning Mamardashvili could try and push through a loan move away from Anfield down the line, in order to gain more match experience.
This will be a fascinating saga to watch unfold, with Liverpool potentially in a spot of bother in the near future where they might have to offload the 25-year-old to ensure he is kept happy.
