In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, new boy James Milner has spoken of his decision to make the move down the M62 to Merseyside, and his desire to win trophies with his new club.
“I saw the passion here when City were competing with them for the title two seasons ago. If you could win the title and other trophies here, it would be a fantastic place to do it,” said the 29-year-old.
Milner was speaking from Thailand, ahead of his first appearance for the Reds, and the enthusiasm towards his move is great to see.
The former Manchester City midfielder, who first took the national stage as a product of the Leeds United academy, has clearly moved for football reasons, rather than monetary.
“When I signed for City, the attraction of going there was that they had not won anything for a long, long time.”
“I wanted to be a part of that and it’s a similar situation here. Liverpool have won so much over its great history but maybe over recent years they haven’t quite won what they’d like to. I see that opportunity again here to go and win.”
In a transfer period that has been overwhelmed by the apparent ‘money-grabbing’ antics of Raheem Sterling, it’s almost fitting that a player that has gone the opposite direction has moved for very different reasons.
In moving to Anfield, Milner accepted a contract lower than the one offered by City, and the reasoning for that is now clear.
James Milner is here to help Liverpool win silverware.
