Milner: Mental strength is needed

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has confessed that Liverpool need to show more confidence and belief in their play ahead of the Reds’ clash with Manchester City at the weekend.

Jurgen Klopp has already said that the Liverpool players’ heads drop after they let in goals and Milner has agreed with this, believing that they need to respond better to difficult situations and have a better mindset in big games.

The game on Saturday will be the first time that Milner will have faced City since he left Eastlands in the summer to join Liverpool on a free transfer.

He was with City for five years – playing in 147 Premier League games, scoring 13 goals.

However, he will now be looking to get one over his old team mates when he faces them at the weekend.

Yet, he thinks the only way Liverpool will get a result will be if they can show good mental strength.

He is quoted in the Mirror as saying:

I think there have been times when we’ve got down on ourselves when the result hasn’t been going our way towards the end of the game.

But we have to realise it can take 94 minutes to break a team down and to keep going no matter what the score and no matter how we’re playing.

We could be having the worst game ever, but if you’re still in the game in the last minute and if you keep pushing forward, you can get a goal and I think that comes from belief.

Maybe times this season when we maybe have played well and had a number of shots – a silly amount of shots – we haven’t got the goal we needed to get the three points and the win.

But we have to make sure that we don’t let that hamper our attitude and our belief going into future games.

Every game is different and no matter how the game is going, if you’re still in it coming into the last minute, you need to keep pushing and go for that goal.

A win for the Reds – which they haven’t managed in a Premier League game at the Etihad since 2008 – would bring them to within six points of the champions from two seasons ago.
