Saints forward Long a target for Liverpool

Southampton striker Shane Long is a shock target for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his attacking options this month, per the Irish Daily Star via the Irish Independent.

The Republic of Ireland international has been in good form this season for the struggling Saints, bagging 10 goals in all competitions for Ronald Koeman’s side from mainly cameo appearances.

However, since the injury to Southampton’s regular starting striker Graziano Pelle, Long has spearheaded the Saints’ attack much more, featuring impressive performances against Arsenal and Watford where he scored two goals and one respectively.

As a result of these impressive performances, it should come as no surprise to see Long linked with a move away from St Mary’s and the inevitable attraction surrounding the Irishman was always going to come from a bigger club, and according to the Irish Daily Star, it comes in the form of Liverpool.

Although the Reds are said to be interested, they will have to fend off competition from Tottenham Hotspur, who are also looking to strengthen their strike force this month.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman has previously said on several occasions that he is not looking to let go of any of his players this January, especially with his intentions of adding another striker to the squad this month, however if a sizeable offer comes in for Long, it may be hard to refuse given his age.

Long joined Southampton in 2014 for a hefty price of £12m; a fee that once seemed fairly large for a player of Long’s prestige and underwhelming goal record.

However, under two years on, Saints are reaping the rewards from the 28-year-old’s performances as he is constantly impressing.
