Shaqiri back in training ahead of Spurs meeting

Liverpool have been handed a second fitness boost ahead of their game against Tottenham at the weekend.

According to the Express, Xherdan Shaqiri joined Joel Matip in making a return to first-team training on Tuesday.

Liverpool themselves confirmed that Matip was back in training earlier this week on social media.

However, it now looks like the Swiss star could join him back in the squad to face Tottenham after recovering from what the Express are describing as ‘niggling injuries’.

Having Shaqiri back fit will be a timely boost for Jurgen Klopp, as his Liverpool squad approach a busy period in their season.

The former Stoke man has not featured in the Premier League since the middle of December, back when the Reds beat Watford 2-0 at Anfield.

Having been limited to just five Premier League appearances this season, Shaqiri will be keen to kick on and leave his mark on the club’s title charge during the second half of the campaign.

Liverpool’s fixture list shows no signs of easing up before the first Premier League winter break takes place in February.

The Reds face the prospect another five league games and an FA Cup meeting before the break, with the return of the Champions League also on the horizon. All of which will put extra pressure on Klopp to rotate his squad, something that should open up further opportunities for Shaqiri.

Shaqiri is a player that plenty of fans have often demanded to see more of at Anfield this season and they may just get their wish in the weeks to come.
