Lionel Messi’s free-kick against Liverpool back in April has been voted UEFA’s Goal of the Season, leading to a mixed reaction from Reds supporters.
The Barcelona legend’s outrageous strike put his side 3-0 up against Jurgen Klopp’s men in the Champions League semi-final first leg and that’s how the scoreline remained at the Nou Camp.
We all know what happened next, as Liverpool turned the tie on its head at Anfield, winning 4-0 on a truly extraordinary night.
Messi’s goal has not been forgotten, however, taking home the prize ahead of a host of other strong contenders.
Here’s how some Liverpool fans have responded to the news on Twitter, with some disagreeing and others mocking Barca about the eventual result.
Divock Origi’s memorable Kop end goal against the Liga giants got a mention.

Sadio Mane’s superb dinked effort away to Bayern Munich was also a beauty.

Others were more cheeky in their assessments, or reminded Messi of the heartache he later suffered.

It’s hard to disagree with UEFA’s decision, considering the inch-perfect nature of Messi’s strike.
At that point, it looked as though Liverpool were crashing out of the Champions League, only for one of the most miraculous comebacks in European Cup history to occur at Anfield.
Mane’s wonderful solo effort against Bayern certainly deserved a mention, as did Origi’s tie-clinching goal at home to Barca, following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s unique assist.
If you’re going to lose out anyone, though, it may as well be to arguably the greatest footballer of all time!
