It was around this time last year when it was announced that Liverpool had secured a deal to bring Joel Matip into the club when his contract at Schalke expired in the following summer.
The Reds are free to speak to any player on the continent if their current deal runs out in the summer and they can even tie them down to the club by offering them a pre-contract agreement and the relative success of Matip has proven that there is value to using this method of recruitment.
Whilst Liverpool chose not to bring in any new players in January, they will (hopefully!) be looking into potential summer targets and whilst fans will want to see them splash the cash, there is some value in the free transfer market too.
