Messi fears Mascherano will return to Liverpool

Javier Mascherano has been linked with a return to Liverpool, where he left for his current club, FC Barcelona, in Summer 2010.

Argentinian countryman and club teammate Lionel Messi has reportedly feared that Mascherano will leave for Merseyside soon.

The 33-year-old has only made five full league appearances this season, as the new manager, Ernesto Valverde, has seemed to prefer the centre-back partnership of Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti.

Liverpool will not be alone in trying to pursue the former Red, as Italian and French giants Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly looking to sign Mascherano on a free this summer too.

Mascherano could well be the solution to Liverpool’s defensive problems, with Klopp’s men receiving heavy criticism for their performances at the back this season.

Speaking a few days ago while on international duty with Argentina, Mascherano said (via Liverpool Echo):

I do not rule out anything, I do not want to be a prisoner of my words, I will seek my happiness.

Messi has reportedly said that his countryman is “set for new pastures” with Valverde making a squad of his own players.

Since leaving Anfield in 2010, the Argentine has won 17 major honours, including four league titles, four Copa del Reys, two Champions Leagues and two Club World Cups.

However, his run at Barcelona may be coming to an end, and Mascherano may look back to where he came from beforehand.
