- Liverpool sealed the Premier League title one year ago today
- It came with a 5-1 win against Tottenham at Anfield on 27 April
- Arne Slot pulled off one of the greatest debut seasons by a manager in English football
One year ago today, Liverpool were crowned English champions for the 20th time. Arne Slot produced one of the greatest debut campaigns by a manager in the Premier League, while delivering many memorable moments that will live on forever.
Exactly one year has passed since the red half of Merseyside was transformed into a scene of unbridled delirium. On this day in 2025, the wait for number 20 was finally over, as Liverpool were officially crowned Premier League champions, cementing a new golden era at Anfield.
It was the culmination of a debut campaign from Arne Slot that defied every pre-conceived notion of a ‘transition period.’ Inheriting the weight of expectation is one thing, but Slot navigated the pressure with a calculated, cold-blooded brilliance that turned a season of uncertainty into one of the greatest maiden voyages the English top flight has ever witnessed.
From the tactical masterclasses on the touchline to the silverware-clinching consistency, Slot didn’t just maintain the standards left behind he evolved them. Twelve months on, the memories of that title-winning surge remain, a testament to a manager who walked into the biggest job in football and immediately delivered the ultimate prize.
The Reds have four more games left to play this season, but there is no harm in saying that this has certainly been one to forget. Nothing in the next four weeks can change that.
That is why there have been increasing shouts for Slot to be sacked as the club’s head coach, with many fans wanting Xabi Alonso in charge next season.
However, the Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are continuing to back the Dutchman, who appears to have a lot of credit in the bank.
For good reason too, as he led Liverpool to their first league title in front of fans since 1990 – something even Jurgen Klopp could not achieve.
It was on this day, April 27, 2025, that the dream became a reality. Liverpool’s 5-1 demolition of Tottenham at Anfield didn’t just secure three points; it moved the final piece into place, officially crowning the Reds as champions of England for the 20th time.
I was positioned right outside the ground, caught in a whirlwind of noise, colour, and pure emotion. The atmosphere that afternoon is something that will remain etched in my memory forever the collective roar of a city that knew the throne was ours once again. It wasn’t just a win it was a coronation.
One year on from that historic afternoon, it feels only right to look back at the path that led us to the podium. It was a season and afternoon defined by grit, tactical genius, and the kind that only Anfield can produce.
From statement victories to pulsracing finishes, here are our Liverpool correspondent Dakir Thanvee’s top five matches from that unforgettable, title-winning campaign.
5. Manchester United 0-3 Liverpool – 1 September 2024
This was the game that announced Slot’s arrival in England. Three games into his tenure, he took the Reds to Old Trafford and dismantled Manchester United with ease.
It was the moment the rest of the Premier League sat up and took notice.
Mohamed Salah was the standout performer (no surprises there), as his 10th goal in nine appearances at Old Trafford underlined just how much he relished that particular stage.
It is a shame that he is set to be unavailable for Sunday’s (3 May) trip to one of his favourite hunting grounds.
For a fanbase nervously wondering what life after Klopp would look like, this was the perfect answer – and it set the ball rolling for what was about to come.
4. Arsenal 2-2 Liverpool – 27 October 2024
4. Arsenal 2-2 Liverpool — 27 October 2024
In the cold light of a late October afternoon at the Emirates, Arne Slot’s Liverpool faced their first true “test” of the campaign. This wasn’t just a tactical battle it was a psychological tug-of-war against a fellow title heavyweight, and the 2-2 draw that followed carried the unmistakable turning point.
The Reds found themselves behind twice, trailing to an Arsenal side that looked determined to lay down a marker. In seasons past, a deficit in North London might have signaled a collapse, but under Slot’s calm instruction, the six-time European champions simply refused to fold.
The equaliser that silenced the Emirates was a masterclass in Liverpool’s evolved transitional play. It was a move of breathtaking simplicity and surgical precision: Trent Alexander-Arnold carved the Arsenal midfield open with a trademark raking pass, finding Darwin Nuñez, who showed immense composure to square the ball into the path of Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian King’s finish was as clinical as it was vital, arriving at the end of a slick breakaway that served as a warning to the rest of the league.
While it only added a single point to the tally, the manner of the comeback felt like a victory. It was an afternoon that proved Liverpool didn’t just belong in the title conversation they were ready to dominate it.
It was the first real sign that this side had the mentality to go all the way.
3. Brentford 0-2 Liverpool – 18 January 2025
If there was one game that won us the title, it was this one.
Heading for a third consecutive league draw and 37 shots into the match, the clock ticked past 90 minutes with the score still goalless.
Then Darwin Nunez came off the bench and scored twice in the space of two stoppage-time minutes.
Talk about coming in clutch. Nunez, so often the subject of frustration from supporters, was the unlikely hero of one of the most important nights of the season.
The result allowed us to widen the lead over Arsenal, who dropped points on the same afternoon after drawing 2-2 against Aston Villa.
2. Manchester City 0-2 Liverpool- 23 February 2025
After Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Manchester City at Anfield in December, it was evident that they were serious about going all the way.
However, the victory by the same scoreline at the Etihad Stadium less than three months later defined the moment the rest of the league knew it was over.
While Salah was the forefront again with a goal and an assist, it was perhaps Dominik Szoboszlai’s personal crowning moment, as he contributed a goal and an assist too, in what felt like a pivotal result in the title push.
1. Liverpool 5-1 Tottenham – 27 April 2025
It had to be this one.
A jubilant Anfield, a perfect performance, a record-equalling 20th title – and the first time we could celebrate a championship in front of our own stadium since 1990.
Everyone knew it was the day. I could not sneak into Hotel Anfield despite my best efforts. Taggy’s next door did not have an inch to spare as well.
Even the spaces in front of the giant screens were so crowded. I could not watch the game even if I wanted to, as smoke from red flares engulfed the Anfield air. I screamed, sang and chanted my heart out anyway.
Dominic Solanke gave Spurs a shock early lead, but Liverpool’s performance was one of champions. Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Salah all found the net in a performance that felt like the whole season distilled into 90 minutes.
When the final whistle blew, Anfield erupted. Thirty-five years in the making for the fans inside – and outside – that ground.
Worth every second.
