  • Liverpool issue Xabi Alonso warning
  • Manchester United could steal main target
  • Arne Slot could remain at Anfield

David Ornstein has revealed FSG’s definitive plan for Arne Slot as Liverpool are issued a ‘cruel’ Xabi Alonso warning. With Manchester United and Chelsea lurking, the Reds hierarchy has made a major decision on Slot’s future at Anfield

A large second of the Liverpool fans have been calling for Slot’s sacking after the subpar season. Many believe that the club should swoop in for former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso, who remains a free agent.

The Spaniard was a target in 2024 when Jurgen Klopp was leaving the club, but he opted to stay at Bayer Leverkusen and then joined Real Madrid a year later. He left his role at the Santiago Bernabeu in January, less than 24 hours after losing the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona.

The manager’s availability and the continued poor performances under Slot have seen the second wanting a change at the helm increase after every match. However, the club have shown no signs that a change is in the works.

Liverpool issued Manchester United warning

Fernando Llorente was talking to Hajper when he issued a warning to Liverpool that Xabi Alonso was not going to wait around for long. He believes that the Spaniard would prefer a return to Anfield, but if that offer does not arrive, he would have no issue picking a Premier League rivals.

The former Spain striker highlighted that Manchester United are looking for a manager, and it would not be a surprise if they make a move for the former Bayer Leverkusen coach. He does not think the Anfield connection would stop Alonso from taking the Old Trafford job and said:

“Knowing Xabi, I think he would prefer to manage Liverpool rather than Manchester United. But right now he is a coach without a team, and if Liverpool don’t need to change coaches and Manchester United do and they make him an offer, you never know. In football anything can happen, we’ve seen many coaches manage their former club’s rivals.”

Apart from the Red Devils, Alonso has also been linked with Chelsea, who have not managed to do well under new manager Liam Rosenior.

Liverpool to stick with Arne Slot, says journalist

David Ornstein was on The Athletic podcast this week and the reliable journalist claimed that Liverpool are planning to stick with Arne Slot. He claimed that the club hierarchy do not think a change is needed even if they miss out on the UEFA Champions League next season.

“All of our information is that FSG, the ownership, the sporting hierarchy at Liverpool – they intend to stick with Arne Slot. From the conversations I’ve had – even if there’s no Champions League football – that’s the intention.”

Missing out on the UEFA Champions League would be a massive blow for the club, but seeing Xabi Alonso move to Old Trafford might just make some fans more.

The Spaniard is seen as the perfect manager by a section of the fans, but reports earlier this year suggested that the club do not see it that way.

The battle for Xabi Alonso has clearly reached a tipping point, leaving Liverpool at a strategic crossroads. While a significant portion of the Anfield faithful views the Spaniard as the “prodigal son” capable of salvaging the club’s trajectory, the hierarchy’s steadfast loyalty to Arne Slot creates a dangerous vacuum.

As Fernando Llorente warned, Alonso’s availability is a fleeting opportunity. The prospect of a former Reds icon taking the reigns at Old Trafford or even Stamford Bridge is a scenario that would transform a subpar season into a genuine nightmare for supporters.

If FSG continues to prioritise stability under Slot over the immediate lure of Alonso, they are taking a massive gamble.

Should Manchester United secure Alonso while Liverpool slides into a season without Champions League football, the “patience” preached by the club may well be remembered as a historic missed opportunity.

For now, the Reds are holding their nerve, but with a Premier League rival looming, the clock is ticking on their chance to bring Alonso home.
