Georginio Wijnaldum’s early header ensured Liverpool finished 2016 on a high with a 1-0 victory over title rivals Manchester City.
The Dutchman’s bullet header on eight minutes, just his second goal for the club, following Adam Lallana’s superb cross, put the Reds in front under the lights at Anfield.
Thereafter, it was a cagey affair as City dominated possession but were unable to craft any real opportunities, with the Reds uncharacteristically solid at the back.
Liverpool were also wasteful in the final third, but saw out the game with relative ease, cutting Chelsea’s advantage to six points heading into the new year.
Jurgen Klopp’s men will now turn their attentions to the trip to Sunderland on Monday.
