Relive Liverpool’s historic 2-1 Merseyside derby win as Virgil van Dijk’s 100th-minute header silenced the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Here’s how Arne Slot’s resilient Reds overcame an injury crisis and a third-choice keeper to secure a record-breaking victory and tighten their grip on securing Champions League football for the 2026/27 campaign.

In a pulse-pounding Merseyside derby that pushed Arne Slot’s squad to their absolute limit, Liverpool snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over city rivals Everton.

With the match deep into stoppage time and tensions boiling over, Virgil van Dijk rose highest in the 100th minute to power home a header, securing a win defined by grit, late-game heroics, and pure resilience.

The Reds season had been going downhill, but now things have changed. Two heroes took centre stage at the final whistle. Mohamed Salah scored the opener, becoming the first player to score in the Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

However, Beto equalised minutes after the break. But the Dutchman had the final say, scoring the winner.
After weeks of unrelenting pressure and mounting frustration, Slot’s side can finally exhale. Beyond the immediate joy of a derby win, these three points serve a vital they ensure Liverpool’s destiny in the race for Champions League qualification remains firmly in their own hands.

What makes this victory significant

Liverpool’s chances of silverware have been completely extinguished. The club’s Champions League exit marked the 17th defeat in all competitions.

On the other hand, injuries have been a huge problem this season. A serious Achilles injury has ruled out top scorer Hugo Ekitike for the rest of the season ahead of the Everton clash.

With so much going on, the Reds managed to beat the Toffees. This win was a feature on the cap moment, as the side became the first team to win at 60 different Premier League stadiums.

According to The Guardian, the head coach captured the true value of the victory perfectly, saying: “It’s an unbelievable compliment to these players because we have played five games in 15 days with mainly the same players.”

The manager spoke about the injuries and the third-choice keeper.

” We had to finish the game without a right-back and started without one – by the way, Curtis did really well – with our third goalkeeper [Freddie Woodman] and a No 9 who has played there in the past but is usually known as a right-winger [Mohamed Salah]. To show what they showed is a big, big compliment to the mentality of this team.”

This victory could not have come at a better time for the Anfield faithful, as the side sit firmly seven points clear of Chelsea in 5th in the Premier League.

How this game will be remembered

Liverpool may have won the match, but the game spoke more about resilience. Giorgi Mamardashvili’s injury in the second half forced an immediate defensive reshuffle.

That opened the door for Freddie Woodman to make his first Premier League appearance since 2021. However, the third-choice keeper surprisingly proved his presence at the end of the whistle.

Additionally, Slot said, “I don’t think we’ve had a lot of big moments this season. We haven’t felt a lot of joy this season yet. … Going out in the quarter-final of the FA Cup and Champions League against the two best teams in the world from open play, with two great managers and unlimited resources, can happen, let’s put it this way.”

The boss shared thoughts on the current league position.
“But in the league, we are far from where we want to be. It’s nice now, after a game in Europe, not to concede in the last minute but to score after a game in Europe the winner in extra time, and from a set piece. You maybe would expect them to score from one, but we did.”

Finally, he praised both the players and the fans, while emphasising the win against Everton.

“Today, the players showed what it means to represent this club. The fans were, as they have been throughout the whole season, a big support for us. To beat Everton in their first game in their new stadium after the week we had is an enormous compliment to everybody involved in Liverpool FC.”

This victory does more than just add three points to the tally; it provides a much-needed emotional reset for a club that has weathered a grueling campaign. By conquering the Hill Dickinson Stadium in its debut derby, Liverpool didn’t just survive an injury crisis they proved that the “mentality monster” DNA remains intact under Arne Slot’s leadership.

As the dust settles on Virgil van Dijk’s 100th-minute heroics, the path forward is clear. With a seven-point cushion over Chelsea and their Champions League destiny firmly in their own hands, the Reds have transformed a season of misery into a season of high-stakes opportunity.

If this team can navigate a Merseyside derby with a third-choice keeper and a makeshift backline, they have shown they have the steel required to cross the finish line and bring elite European football back to Anfield for 2026/27.
