Nilson Moura, the agent of Sao Paulo forward Gustavo Maia, has revealed that Liverpool are one of the clubs interested in signing his client this summer.
It was reported last week that The Reds were keen to sign the 19-year-old and those reports have now been backed up by the player’s agent.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side look set to be disappointed as the Brazilian has already decided to join Barcelona.
In an interview cited by 90min, the agent said:
There were higher offers, but he always wanted to play for Barcelona. They came to see him at the Sao Paulo Cup. He scored three goals and we started to negotiate. They did not even intend to close anything now but since there was interest from other clubs such as Atletico Madrid and Liverpool, they hurried up.

Even considering just how big a club Liverpool are, even the Reds will lose out in transfer battles to Barcelona from time to time as the Catalan giants are still one of the ultimate destinations for many young players.
Liverpool’s scouts have done a very good job identifying young players over the last few years and it looks like they spotted another gem in Maia, which is a good sign as they’re clearly finding very high-quality players.
Unfortunately, it looks like The Reds will miss out on this particular teenage star but the fact that they are continuing to search for, and find, such players, is great to see.
