RB Leipzig defender and reported Liverpool target Dayot Upamecano is unlikely to leave the Bundesliga side in this transfer window, according to European football expert Andy Brassell.
With plenty of interest in the powerful Frenchman, there has been speculation that one of the potential suitors could look to steal a march on their rivals by paying over the odds and eclipsing the £38m release clause in this window.
However, speaking to talkSPORT’s Hawksbee and Jacobs show (Monday 25, 13:50), Brassell said that selling the 22-year-old now ‘wouldn’t be worth it’ for Leipzig as they could put their Champions League qualification hopes for next season in jeopardy.
Brassell added that Upcamecano was in an almost unheard-of position of strength given his lowly release clause, holding the ‘ultimate choice of elite clubs’ at his beck and call.
Unsurprisingly, Bayern Munich are among the frontrunners for the centre-back, whilst Liverpool are joined by Chelsea and Manchester United in interest from the Premier League.
The Reds are set to get a closer look at Upamecano in the coming weeks when they face RB Leipzig in the round of 16 in the Champions League.
READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT
Liverpool are in dire need of a colossus like Upamecano right now, but unfortunately it seems as though that’s now certainly off the cards.
Nevertheless, Jurgen Klopp mustn’t fret and simply has to be at the front of the queue in the summer when the France international is expected to leave the Red Bull Arena.
Signing a player with a ceiling as high as Upamecano’s for £38m is the proverbial gift horse in the mouth of football transfers and the Reds would be forever kicking themselves if they weren’t at least involved in the latter stages of the race.
