Liverpool Football Club have announced that Andy Robertson will leave the club at the end of the 2025/26 season, following in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah’s departure.
Ever since Mohamed Salah announced he would be stepping away from Anfield, at the close of the 2025/26 campaign, the next player who was going to have their immediate future put under the microscope was the Scotsman.
It has now been officially confirmed, to bring any rumours to a close, that Robertson will be leaving Arne Slot’s Reds in June, bringing a decorated nine-year stay at the club to an end.
The reigning Premier League champions broke this news just a day after Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, with Robertson coming on as a late substitute cameo in the French capital.
While Salah officially confirmed his own exit, it was up to the club’s official media channels to break the shock development on Tuesday at 6:31 pm,(GMT) with the post on the club website reading:
“After nine hugely successful campaigns at Anfield, the Scotland captain will leave the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer.
He will do so as a genuine Liverpool legend, having played a fundamental role in the successes of recent years over the course of his 373 appearances to date.
Signed from Hull City in 2017, Robertson has won two Premier League titles, a Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield.
However, celebration of Robertson’s Liverpool legacy is firmly on hold until the conclusion of the campaign, with the No.26 fully focused on helping the Reds end 2025-26 as successfully as possible.”
Also, emotionally speaking via a video on the club’s X page, the much-loved Glaswegian summed up his deep love for the club, by stating:
“From the minute I came into Melwood in 2017 until my very last day at the AXA, I’ll give my all for this club. That’s what I think has brought success to this club over a certain period of time, where everyone has given absolutely everything.
“We have a duty as players to finish this season as positively as possible. It has not been the season that we’ve wanted but it’s up to us to try to finish it on as good a note as possible.
“For me in particular, that’s what will keep me going from now until the end of the season. I know my journey is coming to an end – I know it has been an incredible journey – but I won’t let up.
“This club means everything to me. The fans mean everything to me. The people connected to the club mean everything to me.
“And I think I owe it to them still that until my very last day I’ll give everything to this football club, which I’ve done over the last nine years and I’m very proud of that. That’s not going to change and I think that’s why now is not the time for big emotions or me crying down a camera or anything like that.
“I’m still fully focused on trying to end this season as positively as possible, to help these lads and to try to give a few more good moments to the fans. That’s my aim and hopefully then we can do it and maybe closer to the end of the season you’ll have me down a camera crying my eyes out.”
It really has been a rollercoaster journey for the dependable full-back at Anfield, as he entered as a wide-eyed defender from Hull City, and will leave as a true modern great.
Robertson’s legacy at Liverpool
With 373 appearances under his belt now on Merseyside, it’s clear that the left back will depart as a true icon of the club in modern era.
A fixture of the golden era under Jürgen Klopp, the indefatigable Scotsman leaves behind a legacy of tireless energy and elite production.
During his 373 appearances in the famous red shirt, the reliable number 26 notched 13 goals and a staggering 69 assists, cementing his status as one of the greatest attacking full-backs in the club’s storied history.
Lifting nine trophies across his memorable nine years on Merseyside, which includes two Premier League triumphs, the 32-year-old will be aiming to leave with his head held high when the bumpy season comes to a close.
Still regularly picked by Slot, who has praised the long-standing servant for always being there “every time I need him”, he will still have a huge part to play before exiting at the expiry of his contract.
His next onward destination is already being speculated, as Robertson wanted to leave to obtain more first-team football, as Napoli, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur are rumoured to be circling, for the soon-to-be free agent.
The exit process has been amicable, though, as he prepares to bid farewell.
It will no doubt be emotional when Liverpool fans wave goodbye to both Salah and Robertson for good when the season is up, but the Scotsman will be fondly remembered at Anfield for all his heroics and brave performances.
