- Liverpool boss Arne Slot asked about contract situation
- Dutch coach’s future uncertain
- Current deal expires in June 2027
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has refused to comment on his contract talks. The Dutchman hit out at the media after he was quizzed during the Brighton & Hove Albion pre-match press conference.
Slot’s future at Anfield has been in the balance since October 2025, following a slump in form. The Reds have not managed to recover and challenge for the Premier League title, and are currently battling Chelsea and Aston Villa for a place in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Speaking to the media ahead of the Brighton & Hove Albion clash, Slot said he was surprised by the question of his contract extension. He questioned how things had changed after one win, as the media had previously been talking about a possible sack for the manager:
“Is this how football works? We win one and talk about a new contract?! We didn’t win just one by the way, we won more than everyone thinks last few months. You surprise me with this question, my focus is on Brighton and before then it was getting something positive from this season. We have to fight in this season until the end, my focus is totally on that. We don’t talk about contracts here.”
Slot will be entering his final year of contract in the summer. He had penned a three-year deal in 2024 after taking the role following Jurgen Klopp’s exit.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool future remains in the balance
Slot delivered the Premier League title in his first season, and also took the Reds to the Carabao Cup final, where they lost to Newcastle United. He has not managed to build on it this season, and his side has struggled in most games.
Reports in the media have repeatedly suggested that Arne Slot’s future will not be decided before the end of the season. A section of the fans have been calling for the manager to be sacked this season, but the club have continued to back the Dutchman despite his team’s topsy-turvy form.
Xabi Alonso has been the manager linked with the role, and his exit from Real Madrid sparked more fuel. He was lined up for the Anfield job in 2023 during his Bayer Leverkusen days, but the Spaniard opted to stay at the Bundesliga club for another season.
The Reds’ legendary former midfielder was seen as the clear favourite for the job soon after Klopp announced his decision to leave. But Slot won the race after the Spaniard’s decision to stay at Leverkusen.
Alonso ended up taking charge of Real Madrid following the 2024-25 campaign, but was dismissed just seven months later. He is now available and waiting for the right job after snubbing French giants Marseille.
