- Robertson announced his exit yesterday
- Will be leaving at the end of the season
- Tributes started pouring in on social media
Liverpool players, past and present, are paying tribute to Andy Robertson on social media after the left-back announced his Anfield exit this summer.
The Scotsman became the second player to announce that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season, following Mohamed Salah in March. Interestingly, the two players arrived in the same window back in 2017 and are set to leave together.
Announcing his exit, the 32-year-old spoke to the club’s media team, admitting that it was one of the hardest decisions of his life. He hailed the fans for their support over the last nine years and said:
“It’s never easy leaving a club like Liverpool. It has been a huge part of mine and my family’s life for the last nine years. I think it has been well documented, especially over the last year or so, I’ve had opportunities to leave and I’ve not taken them because of how difficult it is to leave this club. And I wouldn’t change that for the world. But I know football moves on, I know teams move on and I think now is the time for me to move on and go wherever my next move is and wherever my career takes me.”
“I’ll always look back on amazing memories at this football club, I’ve put my heart and soul into the club for nine years and I’ve not got many regrets. I’ve grown as a man and as a person. This club will always mean the world to me, the fans will mean the world to me. It has been a hell of a journey.”
Tributes have since poured in on social media, with his teammates leading the charge.
Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and others send message to Andy Robertson
Mohamed Salah was among the first to post on social media soon after the announcement, saying that words were not needed to describe their bond on and off the pitch. He posted four photos of them celebrating together and wrote:
“With these pictures showing the bond we shared, I almost felt I could get away with saying nothing about you leaving. It’s been an honour to be your teammate and your friend. You’ve won it all and you leave as a legend. I’m sure we will meet again.”
Virgil van Dijk took to Instagram to share his message for the left-back. The Reds captain simply wrote ‘legend’ with a clapping emoji as he shared the Scotsman’s post on his story. Florian Wirtz also followed suit, sharing the post and adding an emoji as his message for his teammate.
Joe Gomez poured his heart out on social media, sharing seven photos with the left-back and writing a lengthy caption, which read:
“Consistency at the highest level over the last nine years. Done it on every stage and won it all. Your standards, your mentality and your personality have had such a huge impact on all of us. You’ve given absolutely everything for this club and everyone within it.”
“The car journeys in together, your voice around the training ground, and sharing the pitch with you are things I’ll always be grateful for. You know how much me and my family are going to miss you and yours. But for now, I’m looking forward to seeing you celebrated and enjoying this last. Legend. Love always brother @andyrobertson94 ❤️”
More players, including Wataru Endo, Hugo Ekitike, and Giorgi Mamardashvili, commented on the left-back’s post.
Curtis Jones posted a short and sweet message on his Instagram story, hailing Robertson as a legend.
Former Liverpool players react to Robertson’s exit news
Jordan Henderson and James Milner were among those who were first to comment on Andy Robertson’s post on Instagram. The Brentford star labeled the left-back a legend, while the Brighton man simply commented three heart emojis.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, who played 279 matches with the left-back at Liverpool, posted an Instagram story of the two holding the Premier League title and added ‘Legend forever’.
Caoimhim Kelleher and Tyler Morton also called Robertson a legend in the comments, while Adrián added a ‘Grande Robo’ comment.
These messages underline what we already knew about Robertson, not just as a player but as a leader and personality within the squad.
The 32-year-old arrived from Hull City with a point to prove and had to fight his way into the team ahead of Alberto Moreno, eventually becoming one of the best left-backs in world football.
While his role has reduced this season with Milos Kerkez coming into the side, the reaction from teammates shows the respect he still commands behind the scenes.
And with more tributes likely to follow, it’s clear that when Robertson does finally say goodbye, he’ll do so not just as a trophy winner, but as a player and person who has left a lasting mark on everyone at the club.
