Former Liverpool captain Steve McMahon has suggested that his former club should part company with forward Mario Balotelli.
Brendan Rodgers suggested in yesterday’s press conference that the Italian’s future at Anfield is unclear and McMahon told ESPN FC:
“For the good of Liverpool Football Club, Balotelli must leave as soon as possible. In some ways, it is out of Rodgers’ hands because Balotelli is under contract, but he needs to do what he can to let him know he’s not wanted.
“Mario has showed that he is a waste of time and money who has become a negative influence in the dressing room.”
The Italian international was involved in some social media controversy earlier in the week after the former AC Milan player encouraged his ex-team mate, Raheem Sterling, to silence the critics after he scored on his debut for Manchester City.
McMahon, who was at the club from 1985 to 1991, wasn’t impressed with Mario’s actions:
“Mario and Raheem can stick together but they are two men that Liverpool Football Club are better off without.
“With Christian Benteke and other players coming to the club, Liverpool have done the kind of business that means that they simply don’t need Balotelli anymore.”
Harsh words on the Italian from a former Liverpool legend. Balotelli’s future is certainly looking uncertain at Liverpool and his failure to be selected for the tour suggests that Brendan Rodgers is planning life without ‘Super Mario’.
Former Manchester City player McMahon is currently based in Malaysia and is the technical adviser to the Frenz United academy.
Liverpool play their next match of the pre-season tour on Friday against Malaysia XI.
