Cameron Brannagan set for League One move

Liverpool youngster Cameron Brannagan looks set to complete a move to League One.

The U23 player, who has been with the Reds since 2001, is on the verge of a permanent deal to Oxford United, according to the Independent.

The 21-year-old has made eight senior appearances under Jurgen Klopp, all during the 2015/16 season, but has since struggled to add to that tally.

Current Oxford United manager, Pep Clotet, is known for his technical style of football and Brannagan, who was once of interest from Barcelona, will suit that tremendously well.

Reports suggest the Manchester-born midfielder could be offered a two-and-a-half year deal with The U’s as they look to cement a play-off place at worst in the third tier of English football.

Brannagan spent the latter half of last season on loan with Fleetwood Town, making 13 appearances. That loan deal never really ignited his career like many thought it would.

He’s made just the eight appearances for Neil Critchley’s under-23 side this season, scoring twice.

The deal could be done and dusted as early as tomorrow.

Opinion

Having watched Brannagan a fair bit over the years as he’s attempted to achieve the holy grail of breaking into first team football from the Academy, I can honestly say he’d be a superb acquisition for Oxford United.

Under Pep Clotet, Brannagan would have a manager who’d appreciate his very good technical game and look to further develop it.

He was never really going to make it as a regular for Liverpool in fairness, but that’s not to say what he’s learned over the years can’t see him go on to succeed elsewhere.

A good second half of the season could well see Brannagan contesting against some excellent players in the Championship in 2018/19. It’s a good move for all parties concerned.
