Emre Can will remain in defence despite Lucas Leiva’s recent injury according to manager Brendan Rodgers.
Can, who is usually a central midfielder, has been playing as a wide centre back in the 3-4-2-1 formation Brendan Rodgers has chosen consistently over the last couple of months.
Lucas could be sidelined for four to six weeks, the Liverpool Echo reports. This has prompted speculation and debate to whether or not Can would be moved further up field. There was a brief glimpse of what the young German can do in a more advanced role in the latter stages of the game against Bolton in the F.A Cup.
“Lucas has been very important for us but there will be an opportunity for someone else.” said Brendan Rodgers.
Rodgers also went on to speak about Emre Can and his future and present position:
“Eventually, Can will be a player who plays further forwards and there might be games when I do think that but you also have to remember the balance of the team as well, which is very good at the moment. It’s four clean sheets in a row and defensively we have been very strong.”
“Why disrupt that and try to fix something that could actually create another problem? The balance of the team is fine at the moment.“
So it looks like it will be the same back three against Tottenham on Tuesday night. Who comes into midfield to partner Henderson?
