Cantwell is no longer a transfer target for Liverpool, claims journalist

Todd Cantwell is no longer a top transfer target for Liverpool, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a good season for Norwich City despite their struggles, scoring six goals and registering two assists in the Premier League.

It led to talk surrounding a potential move to Liverpool, as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his options this summer.

Pearce has played down the rumours on the Red Agenda podcast [03/03/20 – 52:13], however, saying the Reds are not interested in Cantwell, despite some interest being shown:

I wouldn’t describe him as a top target.

He is certainly someone that they’ve watched and heavily scouted but I am not aware of them planning to make a move for him at the moment.

While Cantwell is a talented individual, news of Liverpool no longer showing a heavy interest in him is certainly no disaster.

I don’t believe he was ever viewed as being a key man – more a replacement for fringe player Adam Lallana, who will leave Anfield this summer.

I think Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz, who has also been linked with the Reds, is someone I would be looking at as a more exciting prospect – he is two years younger than Cantwell, too.

The German averages 2.3 key passes per game in the Bundesliga this season, whereas Cantwell averages just 1.1.
