Prior to Sunday’s meeting between the Liverpool Legends and Real Madrid Legends, ex-Red Jamie Carragher has spoken of the nerves he believes the side will feel before the game.
“It’s something that you miss when you finish, getting ready before a game and pulling that shirt on ready to go out,” he told Liverpool’s official site.
“I’m sure there’ll be a lot of joking around before, but I think that hour or two before the game you’re putting your kit on and getting ready, I think there’ll be a few nerves and butterflies.
“You don’t play too often and you don’t want to embarrass yourself, and it’s also taking you back to your playing days.
“For all of us, unfortunately, once those days are gone, they never come back. It’s nice on days like this that hopefully a few of the memories come back and we can still produce near enough what we could do in the past.”
Bootle-born Carragher, known for some imperious displays at the back during his playing days, also revealed his worries about coming up against French maestro Zinezine Zidane:
“Nobody will want to go out there and embarrass themselves, of course, and touch wood it doesn’t happen.
“You’re playing against some world-class former players and I played alongside Zidane in a charity game 12 months ago and he was the best player on the pitch, even then.
“I’m sure Zidane is looking after himself, he trains the B team so he’s training every day. Fingers crossed the lads have been looking after themselves the last couple of weeks!”
Whatever the outcome, it is sure to be a great spectacle with all the proceeds going to charity.
