Jamie Carragher has pinned the blame on Arne Slot following Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Despite being handed a lifeline through two defensive gifts from the hosts, Liverpool failed to capitalize, leaving the traveling fans frustrated as their inconsistent season hit a new low.

The former centre back questioned the manager’s tactical identity after a performance he deemed soft and predictable. Despite a chaotic second half, the result marks a grim milestone for the Reds, tallying their 11th Premier League defeat of the season and leaving Slot’s future at Anfield under heavy scrutiny.

The match began in disastrous fashion for the visitors, who went into the halftime break trailing 2-0 after a listless opening 45 minutes. Liverpool were briefly handed a lifeline early in the second period when the United defense gifted them two goals within the first 11 minutes of the restart.

However, the Merseysiders were unable to capitalise on that momentum. A late strike from Kobbie Mainoo eventually restored the lead for the Red Devils, ensuring they walked away with all three points and leaving the Liverpool away end in a state of growing unrest.

Carragher questions Slot’s tactics at Manchester United

Jamie Carragher was on Sky Sports when he slammed Liverpool’s display against Manchester United. He claimed that the Reds were not physical or aggressive on the pitch, making it way too easy for the opponents.

He recalled playing against sides that liked to keep the ball, saying that they used to target such sides on the counter and it always worked. He fears that Slot’s side have become one of them and said:

“There’s nothing worse than being in a team that keeps the ball, that are just neat and tidy. You want to play against those teams, you feel you can hurt them aggressively on the counter-attack, just set up. I used to love playing against those teams as a player.”

“There’s nothing worse than your team becoming that. When you think of those teams of the past, doesn’t matter who it was, that you maybe disliked watching that are neat and tidy, and as soon as the game gets fast, aggressive and difficult you’re found wanting.”

Carragher added that it has been the main issue this season, adding that the summer signings have only shown that they are heading in the same direction.

“And that’s the big problem with Liverpool this season under Arne Slot. There is talk of where the criticism comes from Liverpool supporters, because he won the title last season. And I get that. But the longer a manager is in situ, the more we see his style of football and it’s definitely more of a technical game. You can see that with the personnel that was brought in during the summer.”

He believes that Liverpool do not have an identity right now, but reminded the fans that they cannot keep demanding Jurgen Klopp football, as that is no longer possible following the German’s exit.

Jamie Carragher worried about Liverpool’s direction

The Liverpool icon has voiced significant concerns regarding the club’s trajectory, emphasising that the upcoming summer transfer window will be a defining moment for the squad’s future. The former centre back believes that the current recruitment strategy must shift toward identifying “powerhouse” profiles players capable of physically imposing themselves on the game rather than just maintaining possession.

In his analysis, the Sky Sports pundit argued that the team has lost its intimidating edge. He stressed the necessity of signing individuals who can dominate their opponents, fearing that without a tactical and physical injection of energy, the side will continue to be bullied by more aggressive units.

“Am I worried about where Liverpool are going? Yeah, I am. I think it will be really interesting who Liverpool buy in the summer, what the profile of player will be. Going for just good players hasn’t worked, it’s blown up in their face. There’s a lack of physicality.”

Liverpool are interested in signing midfielders in the summer, with Adam Wharton linked, but the main focus is reportedly on the wings with Mohamed Salah leaving at the end of the season.

The Champions League winner is clearly wary of the direction the team is heading under the current setup. He warned that if the recruitment team fails to bring in players who offer more than just technical proficiency, the identity of the club could be permanently altered for the worse.

“There’s nothing worse than your team becoming that,” the Bootle-born analyst added. “When you think of those teams of the past, doesn’t matter who it was, that you maybe disliked watching that are neat and tidy… you feel you can hurt them.”

For the long-serving former defender, the solution is clear: the Reds must move away from being “neat and tidy” and return to the high-intensity, aggressive style that previously defined their success. If they don’t, he fears the pressure on the manager will only intensify as the gap between them and the league’s elite continues to widen.
