Ayyoub Bouaddi is a young man in demand, and he knows it.
The Lille midfielder has admitted he is “really happy” with the growing transfer interest surrounding him this summer, following a breakout performance on the global stage.
News broke of both Liverpool and Arsenal making ‘direct contact’ with the 18-year-old’s representatives immediately after he starred in Morocco’s impressive 1-1 draw against Brazil.
A diplomatic stance on the big stage
The speculation did not take long to reach the player himself. Following his World Cup debut, journalists quizzed the teenager about where his long-term future lies.
“For the moment, I’m only focused on the World Cup,” Bouaddi said. “I cannot answer this right now. I am really happy to know that some clubs are interested in me, but for now, I’m here focused on the World Cup with Morocco and we will try to give everything to do our best.”
The youngster delivered a perfectly calculated, diplomatic response. Yet, beneath the standard tournament pleasantries, Bouaddi dropped a clear hint that he is ready to explore a high-profile move once the summer window fully opens.
Premier League heavyweights lead the chase
The battle for his signature is already intensifying behind the scenes. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirms that Arsenal and Liverpool have both held formal meetings with Bouaddi’s agent.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain are quietly monitoring the situation from across France, keeping a close eye on the home-grown prodigy.Premier League Heavyweights lead the chase.
Securing his services will require a massive financial effort, however. Lille protected their asset brilliantly back in December, tying him down to a fresh three-and-a-half-year contract.
That shrewd piece of business means the French club holds all the leverage, slapping a hefty £60 million valuation on their star asset.
Lille ready for the inevitable
Lille are under no illusions about keeping him long-term. They extended his contract precisely to maximise their leverage, rather than block a career-defining move.
“That was a smart move, to be in control of the situation,” Romano noted regarding Lille’s stance. “But it’s also true that Lille are also, first of all, aware of what’s going to happen next. Lille know very well that top clubs will be coming for Bouaddi, because even before the World Cup some of the biggest clubs in the world started some conversations with his agents.”
While these remain early days with no final decision expected until Morocco concludes their tournament run Arsenal have stolen an early march on their rivals.
The World Cup audition continues
Scouts from across Europe will get another perfect look at Bouaddi this coming week as Morocco looks to build on their hard-fought point against Brazil.
The North African side travels to Boston next to face Scotland on Friday, June 19 (11pm BST). Bouaddi and his international teammates will then wrap up their Group C campaign against Haiti in Atlanta on Wednesday, June 24 (11pm BST). If the teenager replicates his opening-match heroics, that £60 million price tag might just look like a bargain.
