The words to endear anyone to a Liverpool crowd have been uttered this evening by Nathaniel Clyne, saying that his aim is for Liverpool to be pushing for the title this season.
Optimism has been getting a bad rap of late, but these quotes by Clyne to the Liverpool Echo are sure to raise the temperature ahead of Liverpool’s revenge mission on Sunday at the Britannia stadium.
“Two seasons ago, Liverpool were pushing and nearly won the league, so we’re not too far away and with the additions to the team this year, we are looking to push on again,” Clyne insisted.
“Hopefully we can push for the title this season.
“You can see with the team and the quality that we have got that we can have a special season.”
Liverpool’s new right-back, who will almost certainly make his Premier League debut for the club on Sunday, is taking over a position that has caused the club problems over the past year, with Glen Johnson not performing well and Jon Flanagan being out of action for a year due to injury.
Speaking about what the other former Southampton players said about his new club, Clyne said: “They told me about how good the club is and it would be exciting if I joined them.
“When Liverpool came in for me, it just seemed like the right choice. I spoke with my agent and my family and they agreed.
“If you work hard you get the big opportunity and chance to play at a big club like Liverpool.
“We had a great season at Southampton and had one of the best defensive records in the league. That put my name on the map.
“I think it’s important to get as much game-time in as you can while you are young. I’ve worked my way up through the leagues and now I’m here at a top club like Liverpool so happy days.”
