Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has been left ‘disappointed and disgusted’ as he condemned plans for the Reds, along with the five other perceived ‘big six’ clubs, to join a breakaway European Super League.
The new competition has been brought in to rival the UEFA Champions League, however, there could yet be further ramifications as respective federations threaten to ban those involved from domestic matters.
Murphy, who played 249 times for the club, has told BBC Sport that the proposed new tournament goes against everything he stands for.
‘That history, that tradition – all of those things that have grown since Liverpool Football Club formed in 1892 – would disappear if they joined this proposed breakaway European Super League and were banned from the Premier League.’
The 44-year-old went on to describe the idea as ‘soulless’ and ‘nonsensical’, thoughts echoed across a majority of the football stratosphere on Sunday night.

A top-four place that could ultimately be worth very little were the Reds to sacrifice their place in next seasons Champions League.
One man whose opinion perhaps matters more than most is Jurgen Klopp‘s, the outspoken German, who has previously voiced his concerns against a Super League.
