Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann doesn’t believe a major transfer overhaul is required at Anfield this summer.

Instead, the German has pinpointed one area within the squad, in particular, that is in need of strengthening when the transfer window reopens.

After consecutive seasons of unbridled success when lifting the Champions League and Premier League trophies, the Reds will end 2020/21 without a trophy having been eliminated from the Champions League this week.

Jurgen Klopp’s side now have seven league games remaining to save their season somewhat and finish inside the top-four, thus ensuring a place in Europe’s elite competition next term.

Despite the struggles, Hamman, who won the Champions Legaue with the Reds in 2005, told talkSPORT that wholesale changes aren’t necessary.

I don’t think they need many big-name signings. Obviously, a lot will depend on whether Salah and Mane stay at the club. I think they missed (Diogo) Jota in the last few weeks, he’s become a very important player for them. The centre-backs will be back. They certainly need two or three signings, (James) Milner is 35 now, (Naby) Keita hasn’t really come to the party since he joined Liverpool, and there are still a lot of question marks over Thiago.

Hamann, who played 283 times for the Reds, went on to say that should Gini Wijnaldum leave there will be an additional need to further bolster the midfield ranks.

Whilst it would be a delight to see either Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland arrive at Anfield, given the financial circumstances involved it seems unlikely that’ll transpire this summer.

Klopp and co have previously been masters of unearthing lesser-spotted talent and turning them into superstars, a trick the club will likely be looking to replicate.
