Emre Can increasingly likely to leave Anfield

Emre Can is looking more likely to leave Liverpool FC next summer with the club not being able to reach a contract agreement with him.

The German international’s contract expires this summer, meaning he would leave Anfield with Liverpool not receiving any fee.

The 23-year-old has scored three goals this season, all in the Champions League, including one on Wednesday’s win at home to Maribor.

It has been reported that Can wants a release clause in his new contract and he does not want as much money as possible from the Reds.

He was first approached by Jurgen Klopp for a new contract in June 2016, but talks have been unsuccessful for nearly 18 months.

If no agreement is made, then within two months he can talk to other clubs to negotiate a contract elsewhere.

For the moment, however, Can is concentrating on his and Liverpool’s football, saying after the Maribor clash on Matchday 4 in the UEFA Champions League (via Daily Mail):

We have two tough games and we want to try and win them to be in the Champions League next year

Whether Can is part of the team that wants to bring further European football to Anfield next year is a different matter.

Can has made 15 appearances for the Reds this season, yet to score domestically and is a firm favourite of manager Klopp with all these occasions of him playing, even with the contract situation.

So Can is a Liverpool player for at least the 2017/18 season and can start talking to other clubs within two months, so whether he is at Melwood training come 2018/19, is yet to be seen.
