After much confusion, it seems as though Liverpool will be taking part in the FIFA Club World Cup later this year after insiders revealed it will take place in Qatar.
Questions over plans for the tournament this year were asked following Liverpool’s Champions League win on Saturday, but reports suggested it had been scrapped as FIFA prepare to make it a 24-team tournament staged every four years, starting from 2021.
However, an article published on The Associated Press today claims the Club World Cup will go ahead, and FIFA Council members will be asked to give their public support to the tournament at a meeting later today.
The report says that Qatar will host both 2019 and 2020 versions of the seven-team tournament, which will be the final versions of Club World Cup in its current format, as the state seeks to prove it is capable of hosting major football tournaments ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
Contesting alongside Liverpool in Club World Cup, to be played in December, will be the five other continental club champions and Al-Sadd, who are champions of Qatar’s domestic league.
Plans for the tournament are expected to be confirmed after the conclusion of the FIFA meeting in Paris on Monday.
