‘Good chance’ – David Ornstein provides big update on Liverpool’s next sporting director

Liverpool officially confirmed last week that Richard Hughes has left the club after two and a half years at Anfield.

The Englishman was in charge of appointing Jurgen Klopp’s successor in Arne Slot and was also involved in the process to bring Andoni Iraola to the club.

He also oversaw some massive transfers at the club but has moved on to take on a fresh challenge, joining Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.

And now, David Ornstein feels Julian Ward could succeed the Englishman as the Reds’ new sporting director.

Liverpool could appoint Julian Ward as sporting director

He said on The Athletic’s podcast: “I think Julian Ward stands a really good chance [for the sporting director position] from the conversations I’m having.

“But it’s important for us not to discount external possibilities, and that process is ongoing right now and they will try to get clarity as soon as possible.”

Liverpool also have David Woodfine and Pedro Marques within the system, so they could well look internally to appoint a new sporting director before considering other candidates.

There isn’t enough clarity on which route they’ll take, but an appointment is expected to be made before the turn of the year.
