Liverpool great Graeme Souness has been left baffled by Mohamed Salah’s exit from Liverpool, as he took to social media in the wake of the Egyptian announcing his departure.

The footballing world is still reeling from Mohamed Salah’s bombshell announcement earlier this week that he will officially leave Liverpool at the end of the season

Many of the tributes flooding in have focused on the 33-year-old’s unbelievable ability on the Anfield turf, with a staggering 255 goals his Reds tally at the time of writing, but some have begun to question the decision to allow such a revered servant to leave for nothing.

Indeed, outspoken pundit Jamie O’Hara took to Sky Sports to declare the whole move as not being a “great deal” on Liverpool’s end, as they have failed to get any significant money from a club willing to take the veteran winger on.

Moreover, former Reds midfielder Graeme Souness – who won a stunning five top-flight titles at Liverpool has come out with his own blunt take on the news that Salah will rip up his contract at Anfield, at the close of the current season.

Souness’ blunt take on the Salah situation

Much like O’Hara, Souness very rarely minces his words when it comes to some hotly debated topics.

Previously, the Edinburgh-born pundit stated that Salah was “disrespecting all of his team-mates” when he had a public falling out with Arne Slot, which resulted in the beloved number 11 being left rooted to the substitutes bench.

He has since managed to turn around his relationship with the Dutchman, but Souness still offered his blunt take on the exit news, with Salah once again on the receiving end.

He said, when speaking on TikTok: “Just heard the breaking news that Salah’s going to leave at the end of the season. Both club and him have agreed to part ways.

It’s strange. They were bending backwards to give him a two-year deal at the end of the season. Within eight months, the relationship is broken down.”

The hard-hitting Scotsman has also commented on Salah’s drop-off in form this campaign, which has seen him only bag five Premier League goals, with Souness labelling his performances as “hopeless.”

He further stated: “He’s been hopeless this year. Hopeless by his standards. The numbers tell you that. And then his antics where he comes out and says he feels he’s been thrown under the bus by the manager.

Well, for me, that’s not how you should have reacted. The first thing you should have done, but even before that, is look in the mirror. What am I doing? What am I not doing? I’m not creating. I’m not being the great player I’ve been for this football club.

So maybe, just maybe, if he had lost his mojo, the time to sell him was at the start of the season, given the outlay that was put down to get the new players in. I think it’s a sad end to someone who had been a great player for that football club.”

While many ex-Reds greats have come out to shower Salah with praise, for his magic performances at Anfield for the most part, it’s clear that Souness still isn’t the Egyptian’s biggest fan.

It hasn’t been the most jaw-dropping swansong season, in all fairness, with off-field dramas and on-field disappointments souring the mood.

But, Salah will hope he can push all this outside noise to one side and deliver some vintage performances between now and the curtain falling on his nine-year stay.
