Henderson out, Lovren on comeback trail

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Jordan Henderson will remain sidelined for Liverpool’s visit to Manchester City on Sunday, but Dejan Lovren is back in contention.

Reds skipper Henderson has missed the last three games with a foot injury and has already been ruled out of England’s upcoming international fixtures.

The 26-year old, then, will be a key absentee for the trip to Etihad as Jurgen Klopp’s men look to take another crucial step towards a top-four finish.

“No chance [he’ll return for the Manchester City game], no,” he told reporters after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Burnley.

“The [international] break, hopefully, this two weeks, can bring him back. But there’s no game possible at this time, that’s how it is.

“He cannot train, he for sure can’t play against City, and then I think it makes sense that he does rehab.

“Hopefully he can run in the second week of the international break, and then we have to see.”

Ragnar Klavan started alongside mainstay Joel Matip against the Clarets as Lovren’s injury struggles continued.

The Croatian had returned to the bench against Arsenal but was missing from the squad on Sunday after suffering a back injury in training.

Lovren played 75 minutes for the U23s on Monday evening as he looks to prove his fitness and secure a timely return to the starting XI.

The Reds are also hopeful that Roberto Firmino will recover from the thigh injury which kept him out against Burnley and forced Klopp to turn to out-and-out striker Divock Origi.
