Improving squad depth the key for Liverpool

Liverpool enjoyed a near-perfect campaign last time around as they came ever so close to winning the Premier League, while also getting their hands on their sixth European Cup, it is going to be a season that will be hard to top for Jurgen Klopp.

Such is the fluidity and togetherness of the current Liverpool side, it can be hard to pinpoint where exactly they need to strengthen. One of, if not the best centre-back in the world sits in the heart of their defence, while they also boast one of the most potent attacking trios in Europe.

The key for Klopp’s men is squad depth and signing players that will enhance the team that they already have available to them. When comparing them to Manchester City, the real difference in the playing staff has to be the size of the latter’s squad and the embarrassment of riches that Pep Guardiola has in terms of options to come off the bench.

While Manchester City will be favourites once again with most betting apps, Liverpool will certainly be a close second in the favourites to the Premier League title next season and squad depth could be the deciding factor.

Look out for sports betting offers at bettingapps.org if you’re backing Liverpool to go one better this time around and beat Guardiola’s men to the Premier League title during the 2019/20 season.

Liverpool have some tremendous quality in nearly every position, but it is when you look beyond the starting XI that some of the holes begin to appear. Both full-back spots could be areas that Klopp looks to address. While Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold were among the best full-back pairings in Europe last season, the Reds do not have many options behind them.

Alberto Moreno left the club over the summer when his contract expired and as things stand, the club have not replaced him. James Milner has been used as a makeshift left-back in the past but the experienced midfielder remains a key component in the middle of the park and relying on him to provide back-up to Robertson could be a risky move by Klopp later down the line.

In the final third, Liverpool could also look to make another addition to not only provide competition to the current front three but also allow more room for rotation. Klopp would have certainly taken the opportunity to rotate more often last season had it have been on offer. If Liverpool are serious about competing in all competitions then another top-class attacking option could be a worthwhile investment.

A player like Nicolas Pepe, who has been linked with moves to Anfield after a stunning campaign with Lille in France, makes sense. Someone of sufficient quality to the current front three, who could come into the side and make a real impact. While Xherdan Shaqiri has impressed in spells during his short Liverpool career, the difference in quality between him and the likes of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah is light and day.

Not only will the added competition for places keep those leading the line on their toes, but the extra rotation will also keep their legs fresh for the business end of the season. Jurgen Klopp has been very clear from the offset that there is unlikely to any wholesale changes to the squad this summer, but the right additions in the form of one or two players across the squad could be just the trick to unlocking Liverpool’s full potential and taking the club to the next level both in the Premier League while also maintaining their status of European champions.
