After a lukewarm start to the 2026-27 campaign, Liverpool have really come into their own under Andoni Iraola over the past month or so.
The Reds are fourth in the Premier League and have won each of their UEFA Champions League group phase games so far.
In the Carabao Cup, they have already overcome Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea to book a quarterfinal clash against Bournemouth, which is another creditable achievement.
And Jamie Carragher feels he has really been proved wrong by Iraola as he initially believed he could be out of his depth at Anfield.
Jamie Carragher lauds Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola
“I count myself as one of those on a journey with Iraola from initial scepticism following his appointment towards cautious optimism having seen his vision starting to take shape,” wrote Carragher in his column for The Telegraph.
“My fear at the start of the season was that Liverpool employed a manager who had never won a trophy, nor managed in European competition. These did not strike me as solid credentials for a job of such stature.”
The game becomes impossible to analyse if players and managers start to get judged based on trophies.
And to be fair to Iraola, his Bournemouth side improved with each passing season in the Premier League and he went unbeaten during the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, which is some achievement.
Anyhow, Carragher has changed his mind now, which goes to show just how impressed he his by the Spaniard.
